Condor Update! As you likely know, California condors are a critically endangered species with only about 300 living in the wild. As such, they are heavily managed in order to help the wild population grow. This means that every condor you see flying in the park can be individually identified and has a history and backstory that is well known to the condor biologists. The birds all wear radio transmitters and tags on their wings to help track their movements and hot spots of activity. Every year

Not a cellphone in sight. Just condors living in the moment. While visitors to Pinnacles often arrive hoping for a chance at spotting California condors in the wild, sightings of these magnificent birds can be unpredictable. Some parties hiking in the High Peaks may go a whole trip without a condor sighting, while others may experience close encounters of the condor kind! Condors are charismatic birds with inquisitive personalities, and it’s not uncommon for them soar or perch near hikers, espec

*UPDATE: Neither condor voluntarily entered the release trap today, so no birds were released. The NCCRP Crew will try again tomorrow, starting at 8:30am. The Northern California Condor Restoration Program is planning to release one condor tomorrow morning (Tuesday, September 9th). NCCRP staff will initiate a "soft release” at 6:30am, letting the condor exit the facility of their own free will, on their own timescale. If it is raining too hard, NCCRP biologists intend to wait until it is clear e

👏Yaaaay Condor! A California Condor was spotted recently soaring in Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve near Flag Hill. California Condors were released at Pinnacles National Park beginning in 2003 to augment the two existing populations at Big Sur and the Sespe Condor Sanctuary. This is a great sign of success now that the Pinnacles Condors are exploring ever more of their ancestral habitat in the Diablo Range. | East Bay Regional Park District

It was a big year for big birds in Pinnacles National Park! Two California condor chicks were fledged to two different pairs within the California park. One of them, bird 1373, likes to hang out near the Balconies Cliffs, so keep an eye out if you’re in the area. The other chick was labeled 1358. Her parents broke a “condor record this year by being the first wild condors to successfully raise a chick 5 years in a row,” according to the National Park Service. Adding to the good news, three more

There are several different ways to hike the High Peaks Loop Trail in Pinnacles National Park, but we’d recommend starting the hike at Bear Gulch Cave (Moses Spring Trail) and returning via Condor Gulch. One of the best trails in the national parks, this 7-mile loop is strenuous and you don’t want to hike it in the heat of the summer. A much shorter alternative is to visit the cave and the reservoir and then take the Rim Trail back to the parking lot. This is only 1.5 miles. (Both the upper and
