Mbiyu Koinange was sent to England in 1952 by the Kenya African Union to lobby the British government on African political rights, land grievances, and constitutional reforms. While he was there, the colonial government declared the State of Emergency on 20 October 1952, forcing him into exile. Achieng’ Oneko was expected to join him, but the Emergency caught him in Kenya, leading to his arrest alongside the Kapenguria Six; Jomo Kenyatta, Paul Ngei, Bildad Kaggia, Kungu Karumba, and Fred Kubai.
