Idlewild was a popular resort town for African Americans during the early twentieth century. At its peak in the 40s and 50s, over 30,000 people would descend on the town during the summer. The nightclubs were a huge draw, hosting prominent entertainers such as Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, and Etta James. When the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 and segregation ended, Idlewild went into decline. Today, Idlewild is not a complete ghost town. Its pristine lakes remain home to a few hundred p
