“Our fish and wildlife resources are central to who we are as Alaskans. They support food security, cultural traditions, jobs, recreation, tourism, and our economy,” said ADF&G Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang Wednesday at a live-streamed cabinet meeting in Juneau. As the longest serving member in the Governor’s cabinet, Commissioner Vincent-Lang was able to look back on the last seven years of accomplishments. 🔹 Sockeye (red) salmon have started to enter the Klutina River (an early surprise when compared to last year!), and anglers are already reporting success. 🔹 The Klutina River is also running very low and has at least 1 foot of visibility, which is unusual for that turbid system--making fishing conditions good. 🔹 Fishing should continue to improve over the next few weeks as more sockeye continue to enter the system. ➡ If you've never fished the Klutina River before, be sure to watch the ADF&G

Not all fish are built the same! Here's how we sort out who moves on. Before fish reach the radial grader, our hatchery team inspects them by hand. Fish with visible deformities, like bent spines or "pumpkin seed" bodies, are removed because just like in the wild they won't survive and take up space needed for healthy fish. These "culls" become food for Alaska's wildlife donated to: ▪Bird TLC ▪The Alaska SeaLife Center ▪local dog mushers ➡️Stay tuned to see what happens to our A rainbows! | ADF&

Why do we separate big fish from small fish? Rainbow trout don’t all grow at the same pace, some are greedy, and others take their time! So we “grade” them, or sort them by size, to help everyone thrive! | ADF&G - Ship Creek Fisheries Center
