CAR T-cell therapy has a problem. This emerging type of immunotherapy is revolutionizing second-line treatment of certain blood cancers like large B-cell lymphoma, where it's curing 30 to 40% of patients with relapsed disease, says Dr. Mazyar Shadman, a blood cancer specialist and medical director of cellular immunotherapy at Fred Hutch. But only a small fraction of eligible patients are receiving this potentially lifesaving therapy. "If I tell you that only 15 to 20% of patients nationally who
