U.S. stock indexes are drifting on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates where they are.

The conclusion of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on Wednesday could produce a historic dissent. If so, investors should be prepared to do, well, nothing, according to one Wall Street veteran. The Fed is seen as virtually certain to leave interest rates unchanged despite intense pressure from President Donald Trump and his allies on Chair Jerome Powell to deliver a cut.

The US Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates steady amid continued pressure from Donald Trump to lower borrowing costs. Trump had earlier announced plans to sack the Fed Chair but later abandoned any consideration of firing Jerome Powell.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., urged Democrats to vote against the bill because it included an exemption for Trump and Vance. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, the original bill’s cosponsor, pulled his support when Hawley introduced the modified version, telling lawmakers during a hearing Wednesday “I have no idea what we’re voting for.”

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley voted with Democrats to advance legislation to ban members of Congress from owning individual stocks.
