Framework, the company that is better known for its modular, repairable laptops, just released its first desktop computer. It’s a small desktop PC that punches above its weight. The most interesting part is what’s inside the device.

The company's debut desktop is a compact microtower that combines Framework's signature swappable I/O modules with quirky design touches. Plus, it promises real productivity and gaming punch from a special AMD CPU.

Who wants a desktop with a handle? You could turn to the many NUC solutions or Apple with its Mac mini. Or, perhaps you can turn to Framework with its new, small PC tower full of customizable parts. Other than updated renditions of the Framework 13 and Framework 16 ultra-modular mobile devices,

Framework’s mission is to “fix consumer electronics, one category at a time” by making them modular, repairable, and upgradable. It’s the only laptop maker to ever truly succeed at that “upgradable” part. But desktop PCs are already modular, so why is Framework making one?

The answer, at least for the Framework Desktop announced today: a gaming PC that takes advantage of many PC standards and offers a unique combination of small size and high performance but which is otherwise substantially less modular and upgradeable than a mini PC you can already buy or build for yourself.

In terms of hardware inside of the case, Framework’s Mainboard (which is available on its own for $799, if you already have a Mini-ITX case that you like) is unusual for a desktop motherboard. That’s because it’s essentially a laptop board.

Framework is bringing its consumer-friendly, DIY approach to the desktop PC space. It worked with AMD to launch a mini PC with AMD's monster Strix Halo processors.

It announced a new 12-inch laptop, a 13-inch AMD Ryzen AI laptop, and a desktop PC. The three new PCs were announced during Framework’s [2nd Gen] event. You can view a recording of the live event if you want to get caught up.
