A Texas district has joined a growing list of U.S. schools warning of a dangerous social media trend encouraging students to destroy Chromebooks.

The Maryland Fire Marshall alerted parents and community members to a social media challenge that has been linked to several recent fires and instances of property damage.

The Chromebook Challenge, named for Google's line of laptops, encourages students to insert metal items into the USB port on their school-issued computers, intending to create sparks, smoke and possibly a fire.
