WASHINGTON — Former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has cleared a vital step in his bid to become Interior secretary.

During his confirmation hearing last week before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Burgum portrayed the Interior Department as key to geopolitical power struggles.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved Interior secretary nominee Doug Burgum 18-2. Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii were the dissenters.
