Several canned tuna products made by Tri-Union Seafoods have been voluntarily recalled after it was discovered that a manufacturing defect could lead to botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The products were sold at Costco and other major retailers under popular brand names like Genova and more.

Tri-Union Seafoods has voluntarily recalled many canned tuna products sold under the Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B and Trader Joe's brand names.

Tri-Union seafood products sold at Costco, Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and other national grocery chains were recalled.

Tri-Union Seafoods, the manufacturer, voluntarily recalled specific lots "out of an abundance of caution." A defect to the pull tabs on the cans potentially could cause the tuna to become contaminated with clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that can cause botulism, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Tri-Union Seafoods, a subsidiary of food company Thai Union Group, is recalling several tuna products over the risk of botulism. The El Segundo, California, U.S.A.-based company voluntarily recalled select canned tuna products under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands “out of an abundance of caution.”

Certain tuna products may have defective lids that could lead to "a potentially fatal form of food poisoning," FDA notice states.

The affected products — which were sold in retailers like Trader Joe's, Costco and Publix — were voluntarily recalled due to the potential for botulism.
