According to the NOAA's scales for the strength of a geomagnetic storm, the northern lights are visible as far south as Illinois and Oregon (around 50 degrees of latitude) for a strong storm, level 3 of 5. If the storm strengthens, that can push the aurora as far south as Alabama.
Cloud cover Tuesday night was mostly stubborn and thick with only some isolated breaks in the clouds.Further northward, last night, there were enough sizeable breaks int he clouds to allow for the Northern Lights to shine brightly!
The national Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a "severe" alert as solar particles speed toward Earth. The geomagnetic activity could produce auroras visible as far south as Alabama.
