Back in January, SFGATE was on the ground in the national park during a previous eruption episode that also rained tephra over the park and surrounding region. During that event, falling tephra hit visitors, drawing blood, and it was the first time the Park Service closed the volcano summit since this eruption cycle began on Dec. 24, 2024.
The nine-hour eruptive event on Tuesday, while contained within the park, produced sustained high lava fountaining, which reached up to 1,300 feet at one point, and began at 9:17 a.m. It also resulted in widespread falling volcanic hazards such as volcanic glass known as Pele’s hair and fine volcanic ash, being reported in Hilo and Puna.
A Hawaiian volcano has shot a lava fountain 1,000 feet into the air, closing highways and parts of a National Park. Located on the Big Island, Kilauea has been erupting since December 2024, with 43 incidents recorded since then.

A 33-year-old man is dead following an overnight rescue operation at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park last week, according to the National Park Service. NPS referred to the death in a news release as an “incident” that occurred Feb. 26 in a closed area on the east side of the Kilauea caldera within the park.

The man was pronounced deceased after being discovered by a search and rescue team and later airlifted to the hospital
