Up to 1,400 people were killed in last year's anti-government protests in Bangladesh, most of them by security forces, the United Nations estimates. The extradition of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a bilateral issue, a senior UN official said on Wednesday. The United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva today launched the “OHCHR Fact-Finding Report: Human Rights Violations and Abuses related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh”.

There are grounds to believe extrajudicial killings took place with the ‘knowledge and direction’ of the leadership, said the United Nations human rights body.

Bangladesh’s new government is struggling to deal with a host of issues, including a stumbling economy and human rights violations, left behind by the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina six months ago.
