The concept was launched by Kent Beck's 1999 book Extreme Programming Explained, which rode Amazon's top 500 for nine months and inspired numerous XP fan sites.
While there are many books on XP, I suggest Extreme Programming Explained. Using this book, Section 1 would be an adequate reading assignment.
Beck then spelled out the development methodology in a book titled Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change (Addison-Wesley, 1999).
