Volkswagen is accelerating its focus on affordable electric vehicles. The company revealed a bold strategy to expand access to e-mobility, with a new entry-level model priced around €20,000.

The new affordable EVs will be based on a lower-cost version of the current MEB dedicated EV platform, found in vehicles like the ID.4 and ID.Buzz. The lower-cost version, dubbed MEB Entry, has been designed to be shorter than the regular MEB platform and features a single motor at the front.

Volkswagen’s new entry-level EV will be part of the fully electric ID product family. This range has been a major success, with over 1.35 million ID cars sold globally since 2019. The new entry-level EV will be based on the MEB platform. It is a shortened version of the one used with the ID.2all hatchback.

Volkswagen is planning a series of affordable EVs for the European market, with the roughly $26K 2026 ID.2 set to be followed by a $21K ID.1 in 2027.
