SUTTON — A mother from Topsfield, hiking with three of her four children at Purgatory Chasm, died in a fall from a rock formation, according to authorities. Rescue crews were summoned to the state reservation near Route 146 about 2 p.m. April 23. A short time later, the request for a medical helicopter was canceled.

The woman was hiking with her children and other family members when she fell approximately 50 to 75 feet, police said.

A person has died after falling at Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon. Massachusetts State Police said they received reports of a person falling shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The person, who has not been identified, died as the scene.
