Major stock indexes finished mixed Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining for a second straight session but registering a weekly gain.

The stock market had its worst day in a month on Thursday after another wave of technology stock selling spread to the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 816 points, or 1.7%. The S&P 500 was down 1.

The Dow surged higher on Tuesday, bolstered by optimism that the US government shutdown might come to an end this week.
